2020 Aston Martin DB11 Volante Bring a Trailer Photography in Cave Creek

In July 2026, I photographed this 2020 Aston Martin DB11 Volante in Cave Creek, Arizona, for a Bring a Trailer automotive photography assignment.

The goal of an auction photography session is different from a typical automotive portrait shoot. The photographs still need to make the vehicle look its best, but they also need to clearly document the exterior, interior, condition, details and overall presentation of the car for prospective buyers viewing it online.

For this two-hour morning session, I created a complete set of exterior and detail photographs of the DB11 Volante, including its dark exterior finish, convertible soft top, red leather interior and engine compartment.

Photographing the Aston Martin DB11 Volante

The DB11 has a shape that benefits from a mix of straightforward documentation and more intentional automotive compositions.

For an online auction, I want potential buyers to immediately understand the proportions and condition of the vehicle. That means photographing the car from the expected front, rear, side and three-quarter angles before moving into more detailed imagery.

The symmetrical front photograph was particularly effective on this car. The wide grille, low hood and reflections across the dark paint create a strong introduction to the vehicle while still clearly showing its front-end condition.

I also photographed the DB11 from several three-quarter angles to show how the body lines change as they move from the front fenders toward the rear of the convertible.

Using the Location Without Distracting From the Car

We photographed the Aston Martin in Cave Creek at a location with repeating garage doors and neutral architecture.

For automotive auction photography, I generally want the environment to support the vehicle without becoming the subject of the photograph.

The repeating lines of the buildings created a clean background while the open paved area gave me enough room to photograph the Aston Martin from multiple focal lengths and angles.

Because the DB11 has a dark reflective finish, controlling my shooting position was especially important. The body panels naturally picked up reflections from the sky and surrounding buildings, which made small changes in camera position noticeable across the hood and side of the vehicle.

Photographing the Convertible With the Top Up and Down

A convertible should be documented in more than one configuration whenever the schedule and vehicle allow it.

I photographed the DB11 Volante with the black soft top in place to clearly show the complete exterior profile. I also photographed the car with the top down, revealing the contrast between the dark exterior and the red leather cabin.

Those top-down photographs create a very different impression of the car while also giving potential buyers a clearer view of the interior.

For an auction listing, this kind of variation is useful because it provides both visual appeal and additional documentation.

Documenting the Leather Interior

The interior was one of the most visually distinctive parts of this Aston Martin.

With the convertible top down, I photographed the seats, dashboard, steering wheel, center console and overall cabin layout.

Instead of relying only on tight detail photographs, I like to include wider interior views that show how the different materials and surfaces relate to one another.

The leather extends across much of the cabin, so wider compositions were especially useful for showing the continuity of the design from the seats into the dashboard, center console and door panels.

Detailed interior photography also gives prospective buyers an opportunity to examine areas they may pay close attention to when evaluating a vehicle online.

Exterior Profile and Three-Quarter Views

One of the most important photographs in an automotive auction set is the full side profile.

It removes much of the visual distortion created by more dramatic angles and gives the viewer a straightforward look at the vehicle's proportions, wheels, ride height, roofline and body condition.

I paired the side profile with front and rear three-quarter photographs to provide a more complete visual understanding of the DB11.

For a car like this Aston Martin, those angles also do a good job of showing the relationship between the long front end, low cabin and rear bodywork.

Engine and Mechanical Details

Auction photography is not limited to beauty shots.

I also photographed the engine compartment and other mechanical details that help document the car beyond its exterior appearance.

Close-up photographs allow prospective buyers to examine components that may only occupy a small part of a wider engine-bay photograph.

The purpose is not to make every photograph dramatic. Some of the most valuable auction images are simply clear, properly exposed records of what is actually present.

Why Auction Photography Requires a Different Approach

A traditional automotive photoshoot might focus heavily on dramatic lighting, location and a smaller number of finished hero images.

A Bring a Trailer photography assignment requires a broader approach.

The photographs need to create excitement about the vehicle while also answering questions.

A complete auction set may include exterior angles, wheels and tires, body details, interior surfaces, instrumentation, engine components, identification information and any areas of condition that buyers may want to inspect.

That balance between presentation and documentation is one of the things I enjoy about photographing collector and enthusiast vehicles.

The strongest auction photography does not hide the car behind a photography style. It gives the vehicle enough visual polish to attract attention while still allowing the vehicle itself to remain the focus.
