The Athletic Podcast Trailer Video Production in Phoenix
Behind the scenes of a Phoenix video production for The Athletic, filming a sports podcast trailer near Chase Field with an agile camera setup, gimbal, wireless audio and branded b-roll.
I recently had the opportunity to work with The Athletic on a video production in downtown Phoenix, filming a short promotional trailer for one of the company's sports podcasts near Chase Field.
The production called for a small, agile setup that could move quickly between locations while still delivering polished video and clean audio. With only a few hours to capture everything, the goal was to keep the production efficient while creating enough variety for a finished 60 to 90-second trailer.
The shoot included host conversations, walking sequences, environmental footage around downtown Phoenix, and additional b-roll designed to give the final video a natural sense of place.
Filming for The Athletic Near Chase Field
The production took place around the Chase Field area in downtown Phoenix, creating a fitting backdrop for sports-focused content.
Rather than building a traditional set, the concept called for filming the hosts in real environments around the stadium and surrounding downtown area.
That approach created a more natural look while also requiring the production setup to stay lightweight and flexible.
I worked with a single-camera setup, stabilized movement, and wireless audio so we could quickly transition between talking segments, walking shots, and b-roll without slowing down the production.
For a project like this, efficiency matters just as much as image quality.
When there are only a few hours available, every setup needs to serve a purpose.
An Agile Sports Video Production Setup
The Athletic specifically needed a production approach that could adapt to several different environments throughout the morning.
My setup included a professional camera, gimbal for moving shots, and two wireless lavalier microphones for the hosts.
This allowed us to capture a combination of:
Host conversations
Walking and moving shots
Downtown Phoenix establishing footage
Chase Field area b-roll
Candid interactions
Lifestyle footage of the hosts
Additional visual details for the edit
Instead of bringing in a large crew and spending significant time resetting equipment, the smaller setup allowed us to move quickly and keep the hosts focused on the content.
That style of production works especially well for sports brands, media companies, athletes, podcasts, and branded social content where authentic interaction is important.
Creating More Than a Talking-Head Video
Although the finished trailer was designed to be short, the production still needed enough visual variety to hold the viewer's attention.
Simply filming two people talking would not have created the same energy.
The b-roll became an important part of the visual storytelling.
Walking sequences, environmental shots, interactions between the hosts, and footage around Chase Field helped establish Phoenix as part of the story while giving the editors multiple ways to move through the conversation.
For short promotional videos, every shot has to earn its place.
The goal is to capture enough variety that a 60 to 90-second final video can continue changing visually without feeling forced or overproduced.
Sports and Branded Video Production in Phoenix
Projects like this sit at the intersection of sports videography, commercial video production, branded content, and documentary-style storytelling.
The Athletic did not need a large commercial production with an extensive crew.
They needed a videographer who could arrive with the right equipment, capture professional audio and video, move between locations quickly, and work within an established production plan.
That flexibility is something I bring to sports video projects throughout Phoenix and Arizona.
Depending on the production, I can work with athletes, brands, media companies, teams, tournaments, podcasts, and organizations to create content ranging from short-form social videos to event highlights and larger branded productions.
Phoenix Sports Videographer

Team and organization content
Every project is built around where the finished content will be used and what the client needs the video to accomplish.
