Courting x Scottsdale Tennis Club Fashion Shoot in Phoenix
Tennis has always had a strong connection to fashion, which made this recent commercial photography project a great opportunity to combine sports, lifestyle, and apparel photography in one shoot.
I photographed a collaboration between Courting, a tennis fashion and lifestyle brand, and Scottsdale Tennis Club at the tennis courts at the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix.
The two-hour evening production was designed to showcase Courting's apparel in the environment it was created for: on the tennis court.
Rather than treating the project like a traditional product shoot, we created a mixture of fashion portraits, lifestyle moments, tennis action, group photography, product details, and branded imagery that gave the brand a much larger library of content to work with.
Tennis Fashion Photography at the Arizona Biltmore
We photographed the collection during the final hours of the day when the Arizona sun was beginning to drop behind the courts.
Golden-hour light worked particularly well for this project.
The warm directional sunlight gave the images a more elevated editorial feel while still keeping the photography natural and connected to the tennis environment.
Instead of photographing the apparel against a plain studio background, the courts, racquets, tennis balls, fencing, and surrounding desert landscape became part of the visual identity of the campaign.
That helped create photographs that felt less like traditional ecommerce photography and more like a tennis lifestyle campaign.
Blending Fashion Photography With Real Tennis
One of the goals of the shoot was to show the clothing both as fashion and as something that belongs on the court.
That required photographing several different types of content during the same production.
We created posed lifestyle portraits that clearly showed the apparel, but we also photographed players serving, preparing for shots, holding racquets, interacting with each other, and moving naturally around the court.
The final gallery included a combination of:
Tennis fashion portraits
Lifestyle photography
On-court action
Individual athlete portraits
Group photographs
Apparel details
Courting branding
Tennis accessories
Product and merchandise imagery
Candid interactions
That variety gives a fashion brand significantly more flexibility than creating one type of photograph throughout the entire session.
Creating a Content Library for a Fashion Brand
Commercial photography becomes more valuable when one production creates imagery for multiple marketing channels.
During this shoot, I intentionally captured everything from wide environmental portraits to tight photographs of Courting logos and apparel details.
Those different perspectives can serve completely different purposes.
A full-body fashion portrait may become a campaign image.
A horizontal lifestyle photograph can work on a website.
A close-up logo photograph can support a product launch or social post.
An action photograph can demonstrate how the clothing looks in motion.
A group portrait can communicate the community surrounding the brand.
Instead of leaving the shoot with only a handful of hero photographs, the goal was to create a complete visual content library.
Photographing the Courting Brand Details
Some of my favorite photographs from the production were the smaller details.
Courting branding appeared throughout the event on apparel, tennis balls, accessories, merchandise, and equipment around the court.
I photographed those details alongside the larger lifestyle images so the final gallery could establish the brand without every photograph needing to feel like an advertisement.
For commercial photography, those supporting images are important.
They give designers and social media teams transitional photographs, detail shots, and brand assets that can be combined with the larger campaign images.
Sports Photography With a Fashion Approach
Photographing sports apparel requires a slightly different approach than photographing a competitive sporting event.
During a normal tennis match, the priority is capturing peak action.
For a fashion campaign, the clothing also needs to look intentional.
Body position, light, garment visibility, background, expression, and composition all become part of the photograph.
That meant sometimes allowing real tennis action to develop naturally and other times creating controlled moments that felt athletic while giving the apparel the strongest possible presentation.
The result is somewhere between sports photography and editorial fashion photography.
That combination works particularly well for athletic apparel, fitness companies, sports brands, and lifestyle campaigns.
Commercial Sports & Fashion Photography in Phoenix
Projects like the Courting and Scottsdale Tennis Club collaboration represent the type of commercial photography I enjoy most: productions where the finished imagery needs to do more than simply document what happened.
The photographs need to communicate a brand.
I provide commercial photography throughout Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, and across Arizona for apparel companies, sports brands, athletes, fitness companies, events, and businesses.
Depending on the project, a production can include:
Fashion and apparel photography
Sports photography
Athlete portraits
Lifestyle campaigns
Product photography
Branded events
Social media content
Behind-the-scenes photography
Photography and video production together
The production can also be planned around how the finished assets will ultimately be used so we capture the right combination of horizontal, vertical, wide, tight, action, and detail imagery during the same shoot.
